On the courts this morning, I commented, “Pickleball saves Retirement, ” and everyone agreed. Granted, most of the people playing this morning were in their 60s and 70s and retired; they play almost every morning. It sure beats sitting around, drinking too much and packing on the pounds. But why pickleball, you ask?
The gang I play pickleball with is fit, happy, and friendly. Are pickleballers competitive? Sure, but not at the expense of enjoyment of the game. Are they all athletes? Most have played a racket sport before, mostly tennis, racquetball or ping pong. Occasionally, a new player with absolutely no sports background decides to take up pickleball. With practice, taking advantage of clinics and lessons, almost anyone can learn to play a social game.
Do couples play together?
That’s a loaded question! Pickleball saves retirement, and sometimes it also saves a marriage! My husband Bill and I play rather well together. As long as he is having a good day, we can be very competitive. We still have fun if he’s a little off, but I am not good enough to make up for it. Not all couples are so fortunate. Some married couples deliberately do not play together. It’s fun to watch some of them play against each other; now that is competition.
What about pickleball tournaments?
For the past three years, we have played with many of the same people. The best players have begun to play tournaments, and each weekend, a dozen or more travel to play all over Florida. It is not inexpensive! First, you pay to enter. Then, you pay to stay in a hotel or bring your RV. You have to eat, and celebrate if you win a medal. Prize money is modest, but they’re not playing for the money. Bragging rights and being honored by your peers – priceless.
Would I play in a local tournament? Sure, but do I plan to become a tournament player? No. I’m afraid I started a little too late to go that far. But, a friendly round-robin tournament with players from other parts of Florida? We’re planning to do this next year.
We always pack our paddles
When we travel, we always pack our paddles. Pickleball courts are popping up everywhere, even in some RV Parks! The great thing about this fast-growing sport is that you can find open play almost everywhere most mornings. Some apps help you find local courts and identify the type of play.
So, if you’re reading this and you play pickleball, I hope we cross paths during our travels. Let me know where you play and how we can connect.
I even take my paddle out of the country to experience how others outside the US enjoy the sport. I usually pickleball my way to and from Florida. Meet many great people and it’s fun to see how other clubs are organized for pickleball. See ya on the court!
We do the same! Our Key Largo group is up there with the very best on and off the courts.
