My Retirement Stories

Painting with Becky Steele

North Myrtle Beach-Last Stop

En route to North Myrtle Beach, our Last Stop, hunger struck. We love North Carolina Barbecue, so I Googled “barbecue near me,” read the reviews and stopped for lunch at Kent’s Kountry Barbecue. What a good decision! When I spotted the sign for “Texas Barbecue,” I asked the proprietor why there was Texas Barbecue in North Carolina; he told me he was from Oklahoma. Not sure how that made sense unless there is no Oklahoma Barbecue! The barbecue was delicious; we highly recommend this friendly spot.

NMB RV Resort & Dry Dock Marina

Choosing an RV Resort or campground online can be a challenge. On our last stop, North Myrtle Beach, we were looking for a convenient location with full hookup sites not far from our friends. Traveling in our Airstream allows us to visit friends without staying in their guest rooms! Located right on the Intercoastal Waterway with spacious sites, this resort was one of the nicest on this trip, with many amenities and activities. We recommend the NMB RV Resort & Dry Dock Marina.

North Myrtle Beach Pickleball

We found a fun, challenging group of pickleballers at the J Bryan Floyd Community Center. The facility has indoor courts for players of different levels, and they use a system much like the one we use in Key Largo. Every morning from 8:30 to 11:30, we rotated play and hardly sat down. Thank you to petite but powerful Fran and the rest; come see us in The Keys!

Painting with Becky Steele

Several years ago, Bill and I visited our friend Becky Steele and she guided me through my first painting. Since retiring last year, I have been playing with acrylics and taking classes. Spending a week painting with Becky has been the highlight of my summer. My head is exploding with all the knowledge she has shared. Most importantly, she taught me how to prepare the canvas and how to layer and blend, layer and blend. I have pages of notes on the proper brushes, pens, pencils, and paints, as well as where to order them.

Will I ever think of myself as an artist? I don’t know how to judge my own work, but I am having fun. Becky has me blending with my fingers and damp paper towel and wiping them on my painting t-shirt! It’s like adult finger-painting! Combining my love of jazz with my new love of painting is what I worked on this week, and the hours just flew by.

Dining in North Myrtle Beach

Sugar Shack in Ocean Isle, NC, is one of my favorite restaurants, and it was great catching up with Linda and Dave Bryce. I was here 25 years ago when they first opened, and Dave’s Jamaican food is just as good today. I can’t believe I did not take any photos of the food or Linda and me! That’s how good the food was.

Bill and I were in Myrtle Beach about 10 years ago over Thanksgiving, and we remembered dining at the Sea Captain’s House. It was just as good this time. Clark’s in Little River was so good for dinner that we went back on our last day for brunch with friends from Delaware that moved to Myrtle Beach in 2013.

Time to go home

We have had such a great time on our Airstream Summer vacation. It’s been almost 3 months on the road visiting friends and making new friends on the pickleball courts.
